What can Prenatal Yoga do for you?

Congratulations! You’re pregnant! It can be a pretty exciting time. It also is a time of a great many changes to your body .If you are already a “seasoned” yogi then great- continue on. If not, or you are curious about it, then why not consider trying prenatal yoga designed just for you.

My focus is two-fold.

1) Mother the Mother - Making sure you as the Mom feel supported by blankets, bolsters, blocks, mats, soothing music and a slower approach to postures and poses that are beneficial for you. However I am not the expert of your body, but I am responsible for your safety. You will be encouraged to listen to your own body and only do what feels right for you and baby.

2) Make Room for Baby - What I mean by that is as your body changes and your baby grows, certain postures or poses might require you to adjust how you stand. (e.g. legs further apart ) Due to changes in hormones your joints become looser. You may experience some instability so we have props and walls to help. Lying down on your back, becomes lying on your side with bolsters between your legs. A simple “Child’s Pose” becomes a wide-legged one with blankets, bolsters or blocks or even maybe all three!

There is much research to suggest that Yoga, and especially Prenatal Yoga, can provide numerous benefits. Some of these benefits might include;

  • better sleep

  • reduced stress & anxiety

  • increased strength, flexibility and endurance of muscles for childbirth

  • decrease lower back pain, nausea, headache and shortness of breath

  • preparation for labour and promote baby’s health

  • stretching

  • mental centering

  • focused breathing

  • opportunity to meet other pregnant women

  • a way to prepare for the stress of being a new parent
